Industry Navigation Coaching Workshop

Back in the day, people changing careers or moving between industries was not the standard professional behaviour. This has drastically changed in the last decade, thanks to greater access to education, advancements in technology, and a newfound appreciation within companies for employee growth and learning. However, even with these tools available, many experience thoughts of incapability of making a drastic change, or they believe they do not have the necessary skills for areas they would like to move into. This phenomenon is called imposter syndrome and it can hold you back from grabbing any sort of new opportunity that presents itself.

What is imposter syndrome?

Imposter Syndrome is when you feel like you are not as competent as others or a fraud. People who suffer from imposter syndrome will never admit anything good that happens to them or any of their achievements are based on efforts but from pure luck. Here are some of the identifying symptoms that may indicate you are experiencing imposter syndrome.

  • You rarely or never attribute success to internal factors

  • You tend to overprepare or overachieve for tasks that do not need such effort

  • You experience extreme waves of motivation that is paired with anxiety when directed towards a goal

  • You experience self-doubt on the regular

  • You never speak positively of your performance, present, and past

  • You actively sabotage your own success

  • You tend to set challenging goals and experience intense dissatisfaction when you fall short of achieving them

These symptoms can form a cycle that is tricky to get out of. Even if someone accomplishes something remarkable, their belief on what drives the outcome does not change.

How can this affect your professional development?

Even if you experience only a few of these symptoms, they are problematic for any sort of career movement. This is because the negative thoughts that drive imposter syndrome can trap you in roles that are well below your potential. If imposter syndrome creeps into management and leadership roles, it is damaging for both the person and the company the work for as it reduces innovation, risk-taking, and the ability to make tough and unpopular decisions.

Then there are other opportunities that can be taken on, which include changing industries completely or even chasing a passion. Imposter syndrome makes moves like this virtually impossible. Let’s put it this way, if you are doubting, that you’re good enough to move up in an industry you have experience in, then what chance is there you will feel confident moving into something unfamiliar and new.
